According to Polytron, Fez creator Phil Fish has announced that he is cancelling the recently announced Fez II, as well as completely leaving the video game industry.
Earlier this week, Phil took part in an interview with Marcus Beer, better known as his internet personality, Annoyed Gamer. During the interview, a heated argument broke out between the two, stemming from a comment Beer made in a previous GameTrailers episode of Invisible Walls, in which he called-out Fish and Jonathan Blow for not commenting on the Xbox One’s policies for Indie developers:
“You were the guys who did Indie Game: the Movie. And some of you looked relatively normal in it, one of you looked like a total tosspot in it. But you can’t have it both ways. You’re successful game designers — you’re ‘indie’ game designers — hurrah, good for you, you fucking hipsters.”
Fish took to Twitter to express some personal rage against Beer before his Twitter profile was switched to “Private“:

While the announcement about Fish completely relieving himself of the video-game industry, was believed to be a joke, especially since Fez II was recently announced at E3 2013, Polytron confirmed his decisions to be true. Fish also commented on Polytron’s website with this:
“FEZ II is canceled. I am done. I take the money and I run. This is as much as I can stomach. This is isn’t the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign. You win.”
He followed this up, stating that he wasn’t leaving due to Beer’s remarks, but choosing “not to put up with the abuse anymore”. While this public incident may have been the last straw, this isn’t the first time Fish has been under fire in the video game industry, as he received backlash from the gaming community for calling gamers the “worst fucking people” for not supporting Fez, announcing that Japanese games are “fucking terrible nowadays“, and has launched aggressive attacks of his own with critics in the past.
