Last week, Square Enix laid-off roughly a dozen positions at Crystal Dynamics; while development of the next Tomb Raider game remains unaffected, that mystery IP that the developers were working on is now in jeopardy.
Kotaku confirmed earlier today that presumably 12 positions were laid-off at Crystal Dynamics by Square Enix, all of which were working on a mystery IP announced at the start of 2012. A statement addressed to Kotaku shows that the staff members were let go due to reassessment of the project, but Square Enix hopes to aide them in future endeavors:
“We’ve made some decisions at Crystal Dynamics last week around the second project we’re working on, which has resulted in a small number of roles (roughly 12) becoming redundant as we re-scope the project. This doesn’t affect the Tomb Raider development team, who as confirmed last week are well into production on a next-generation sequel. We’re a close-knit team at Crystal and wouldn’t be making these changes if we didn’t feel it was absolutely necessary. We’ll help those affected as best we can and we want to thank them for their hard work and commitment…”
There have been no new announcements about the new IP from Crystal Dynamics since its announcement…in January 2012.
