‘Choice: Texas’ Highlights Texas Abortion Access Through Game

Choice: Texas is “a very serious game” about the current state of abortion access in Texas.

Choice: Texas is a crowd-funded project that plans to enlighten people about the current state of abortion affairs in Texas through a different kind of medium- a video game. Developed by Allyson Whipple and Carly Kocurek, with illustrations by Grace Jennings, Choice: Texas follows the lives of five different women who seek abortion due to various reasons, and will have to deal with emotional, financial and social obstacles in their lives; the project hopes to give players a more personal, serious look at how proposed Texas abortion laws will affect the lives of women within the state:

“We are billing Choice: Texas as ‘a very serious game,’ and we mean that. While the game is intended to be engaging, the issues it addresses are very serious. Women’s access to reproductive healthcare in Texas is significantly limited, a state of affairs that is especially true for women who are working class or poor, or who live in rural areas. One of the great strengths of games is that they can invite players to explore other people’s experiences; Choice: Texas is such a game, and asks players to seriously consider the plight of Texas women.”

If Choice: Texas is funded, it will be available around January 2014; with 20 days still remaining, the Indie GoGo campaign has raised more than 50% of the proposed $9,250.
