Grand Theft Auto V won’t be available until Tuesday (midnight), but some “lucky” gamers already have a copy, due to a retailer breaking the street-date release.
It should come as no surprise for a complete game to leak early, typically through piracy; it’s not as common for complete games to be shipped in mass early. Over the weekend, several Amazon customers have posted photos across social media outlets, revealing that the worldwide retailer has broken street-date regulations: The “street-date” is the official, finite starting date for a product to be physically distributed among customers; most retailers receive a shipment of products a few days in advance, but those items cannot be sold until the street-date. As further evidence, there’s even a video of an 11-year old throwing a “fit of joy” over receiving his copy of GTA V early:
Rockstar made a brief response to GamesIndustry, stating the company is “in the process of investigating early ‘sales’ to determine how and why that is occurring.”
Those foolish enough to play full-titles before their official release date are usually met with an account-ban or termination on the platform in question.
Grand Theft Auto V officially releases in two days.
