Super Mario 3D World claims to be “the cat’s pajamas” in this new, thorough gameplay trailer.
Super Mario 3D World blends elements from almost every Mario series to-date: Players can take control of either Mario, Luigi, Peach or Toad- all of whom have variations of their abilities from Super Mario Bros. 2 (Super Mario USA in Japan); stages are connected across an over-world map, except that 3D World features one that players can freely explore, and venture beyond the paths that connect each stage; iconic power-ups will return, such as the Tanooki Suit, Fire Flower and Boomerang; certain levels will also feature a “Light Box” which reveals ghosts who are within the player’s line of sight, influenced by Luigi’s Mansion; several of the stages have architecture and gameplay elements influenced by the Super Mario Galaxy series on the Wii.
New features to 3D World include a “Cat Suit” that allows players to slash, dive, and climb up walls; other “wearable items” include the previously-mentioned Cat Suit, a “Cannon Box”, Koopa shells- the trailer even shows off a bit of stealth as Mario disguises himself as a Goomba. Much like the “Super Mode” from Donkey Kong Country Returns, Super Mario 3D World will feature a White Tanooki Suit, which will activate after has achieved a certain number of deaths; unlike White Donkey Kong from DKCR, the White Tanooki Suit will not automatically show a stage’s solution, but will instead grant unlimited invincibility for the player.
Online features will include “Ghost Mii” replays from other players and collectible Miiverse stickers:
Super Mario 3D World will release for the Wii U on Nov. 22.
