Sega’s mascot goes back to basics when the first of two new Sonic games arrives in August.
In celebration of the franchise’s 25th Anniversary, Sonic fans will receive not one, but two brand new titles featuring the iconic blue hedgehog later this year. Developed under Sega of America, PagodaWest and independent coders Christian Whitehead and Simon Thomley, Sonic Mania will release first for both consoles and PC. The title brings Sonic back to his roots with Genesis-era 2D gameplay, but with an extra technique- the “Drop Dash”; players will have the ability to execute a Spin Dash immediately after landing from a jump.
Sega recently confirmed the release date of Sonic Mania following several rumors, courtesy of a new gameplay trailer. Fans can see all three marquee characters traversing across a handful of stages original to Sonic Mania, and a plethora of remixed levels from the original Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy.
Sonic Mania will release on 8/15 for PC, Xbox One, PS4 and the Nintendo Switch. The previous “Sonic 2017” has since been given the official title of Sonic Heroes. The 3D half of Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary celebration, Sonic Heroes will allow players to complete levels as both the “Modern” and “Classic” Sonic variations, and play as custom player-made characters.
