Clone Troopers, Battle Droids, a Sith and a Jedi-in-training go to war on Naboo in the debut multiplayer footage of Star Wars Battlefront II.
Star Wars Battlefront II was arguably the highlight of today’s EA Play presentation at E3 2017, consuming roughly 30 minutes of the show. Led by actress Janina Gavankar (face and voice of “Iden Versio”), EA’s Battlefront II segment showcased two brand new gameplay segments on the “Assault on Theed” multiplayer map. Set against the backdrop of “Episode I: The Phantom Menace”, both the live multiplayer demo and “game engine” trailer showcase a war between the Separatists and the Clone Army, with 40 players (various YouTube and Twitch personalities) controlling the likes of Battle Droids, Clone Troopers, V-Wings, Naboo Starfighters and more; hero units Boba Fett, Han Solo, Rey and Darth Maul all make brief appearances during the final skirmish within the temple.
Very few details were given outside of the multiplayer reveal, but Gavankar did confirm that Battlefront II‘s single-player story will bridge the gap between “Episode VI: Return of the Jedi” and “Episode VII: The Force Awakens”. As with the previous Battlefront from EA and DICE, several iconic characters will be available as temporary Hero units in multiplayer, however players will now activate them through the use of “Battlepoints” as opposed to the previous in-game Tokens; Battlepoints are earned for every successful kill and completed objective, and are used to unlock more customization options, weapons, and decrease the activation times for select vehicles and Hero units.
Though he wasn’t able to attend the E3 event in-person, John Boyega did appear during the EA Play presentation through a prerecorded video, confirming that both Finn/FN-2187 and Captain Phasma will appear as future Hero units to be added with the first content update. Both Gavankar and Boyega announced that Star Wars Battlefront II will receive multiple content updates in traditional “Seasonal” waves, with the first including content from “Episode VIII: The Last Jedi”.
There will be no Season Pass, as all future content will be free to anyone who owns Star Wars Battlefront II.
Star Wars Battlefront II will release for the PC, Xbox One and PS4 on 11/17. Those who pre-order will receive early access to the future multiplayer Beta.
