Capcom Has No Plans For Future Darkstalkers Games

The Darkstalkers series hasn’t had a new game in quite some time, yet fans still hold out for a revival of the classic fighting-game franchise. Sadly, a new Darkstalkers title won’t be happening anytime soon.

Capcom tends to passively advertise new titles by including key characters in cross-over games: The redesigned Dante from DMC was a playable character in Sony All-Stars Battle Royale; Strider Hiryu was missing from the Marvel VS Capcom 3 roster, but returned for Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3; a new Strider game was announced last week. Project X Zone, which features over 50 different characters across three different companies (Capcom, Sega, Namco Bandai), includes Darkstalkers characters Morrigan, Jedah, and Demitri, along with a stage modeled after the “Fetus of God” arena; in the past, Capcom expressed intentions of reviving the lost series.

While Capcom released Darkstalkers Resurrection this past March, it wasn’t a new chapter of the series, but was instead HD versions of Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. While Resurrection was well-received, it wasn’t considered to be commercially successful by Capcom’s standards. In an interview with Siliconera, Fighting Game Manager Matt Dahlgren, stated that Darkstalkers didn’t perform in the market as well as Capcom would have hoped.

A running theme from Capcom fighting-game panels, was that Street Fighter Producer Yoshinori Oni would always state that “Darkstalkers is not dead.” However, according to Dahlgren, “You never know what the future may hold, but Street Fighter is definitely not dead…There is nothing Darkstalkers on the immediate horizon for sure.”
