Sony Announces New Vita Consoles For Japan

Sony has some new additions to the Vita family along the way, including a slimmer model and the television-based PS Vita TV.

Sony held a pre-TGS (Tokyo Game Show) conference earlier today, where the company unveiled two new systems for their family of handheld devices. A new PS Vita will be available in Japan starting on Oct. 10; the new design features a more compact frame and a 6-hour battery. The new model ditches the OLED screen for a 5-inch LCD display, and will be 20% lighter and 15% thinner than the original Vita. The slimmer Vita features 1GB of internal memory, along with a micro-USB port for standard chargers- the old PS Vita charger will not be compatible with the new model; Sony also plans to drop prices on all of the Memory Card options for the current Vita. The slimmer PS Vita will be available in six different colors, and will be a Japan-exclusive console [for now].

November also marks the release of the new PS Vita TV. The lightweight console plugs directly into the TV, and includes a slot for Vita cartridges. The Vita TV is capable of streaming online media services and can play digital PSP and PS1 games; the system can also stream content to another TV connected to a PS4 via Remote Play. The PS Vita TV will include the console, a DualShock 3 controller and an 8GB Memory Card. The Vita TV releases on Nov. 14; a worldwide release has not been announced.
