VGX 2013 Trailer Recap

The 10th annual Video Game Awards program was broadcast tonight across Spike, consoles, and the internet; those who missed out on VGX have some catching up to do, as fourteen new trailers were shown this evening.

Tales From The Borderlands

Probably the most unexpected surprise of the evening, Telltale Games and Gearbox Software are working on a collaborative project called Tales From the Borderlands. While the game will not cast players as the iconic Vault Hunters from the FPSRPG series, gamers can choose from Vault Hunter “wannabes”:

Cranky Kong in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

It was leaked earlier in the week, but for the first time in the Donkey Kong series (without going into theories about the DK-universe), the grouchy old ape himself will be a playable character, complete with his own moves and abilities:

Quantum Break Gameplay Reveal

While most of the finite details regarding actual gameplay were kept under-wraps tonight, the new trailer for Quantum Break discussed how time itself has literally been broken, and how it affects environments around the player. The game still has a TV-show counterpart, which will intersect with the game at “Junctions”, where the player will actually get to progress through missions as Quantum Break‘s antagonist:

Agents of Storm For iOS

Remedy also has another project which will be available for iOS in January- Agents of Storm. It’s still in the early stages of development, but this will be a “reverse tower-defense” strategy title featuring simplified naval warfare:

South Park: The Stick of Truth Gameplay Trailer

Matt Parker and Trey Stone presented not only the award for “Game of the Year” (Grand Theft Auto V), but also a new trailer for The Stick of Truth, featuring QTE-esque spell-casting…..er, “fart-casting”:

Destiny Gameplay Trailer

A new trailer for Destiny showcased the expansiveness and variety of abilities featured in Bungie’s future FPS:

Broken Age Gameplay

After an astonishingly successful Kickstarter campaign, Broken Age from Tim Schafer and Double Fine was featured in a new trailer and gameplay demo this evening; voice talents revealed during VGX included Jack Black and Elijah Wood:

Tom Clancy’s The Division Snowdrop Engine Trailer

The Division may not have had a trailer that revealed new gameplay, however the new Snowdrop engine is a jaw-dropping spectacle to behold:

Game of Thrones Teaser

It’s safe to assume that things are very hectic at Telltale Games right now; not only are they working on The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead: Season 2, and the previously mentioned Tales From the Borderlands, but Telltale officially announced that a game based on the TV adaptation of Game of Thrones was in-development. While the trailer is only a teaser, an interview revealed that gameplay will be like previous Telltale games, but with a heavy emphasis on action and player-choice:

No Man’s Sky Debut Trailer

No Man’s Sky is an ambitious project from four developers at Hello Games; the title features a procedural-generating world with incredible environments…If you can see it, you can go to it, no matter how far:

Dying Light Gameplay Demo

Two gameplay demos were shown tonight for 2014’s multi-platform zombie-title Dying Light; the first was being a 6 min. demo showcasing the free-form parkour mechanics in action as the player made the trek up towards an overpass; the second demo was a brief play-through with YouTube sensation PewDiePie:

Thief Story Trailer

A new trailer for the Thief reboot from Eidos Montreal was revealed tonight, along with some brief moments of iconic stealth gameplay:

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Gameplay Trailer

CD Projekt Red continues to impress with this new gameplay trailer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, revealing more of the lush visuals, massive landscapes, and complex combat systems:

Titanfall Hammond Robotics “Ogre” and “Stryder” Trailers

Hammond Robotics, the in-game manufacturer of Titan mechs, provided VGX with some behind-the-scenes testing footage of two new Titan units, the “Ogre” and “Stryder”:

As an added bonus, calling 1-888-88TITAN will lead fans to a recorded message that plays sales-information about Hammond Robotics.
