As movie-goers experienced with Need For Speed, video games don’t necessarily require a plot to be turned into a full-length film. It looks like another story-free franchise may come to the silver screen, as a Space Invaders film may be in production.
According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to produce a Space Invaders film, based on the classic arcade game. The film’s production will be under Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnel of Weed Road and Safehouse Pictures. Goldsman is the producer of many successful properties, including Paranormal Activity 2-4, Fringe, I Am Legend, and Winter’s Tale.
While Space Invaders lacks a rich narrative, the lack of a plot hasn’t stopped game franchises from becoming full-length films in the past; both Battleship and Need For Speed received live-action movie adaptations, along with the in-production Gran Turismo film.
