The talents behind some of the most infectious tunes from the Sonic franchise may have accidentally revealed that a 25th Anniversary Sonic the Hedgehog game is in development.
Since 1998, the duo of Johnny Gioeli and Jun Senoue have contributed their power vocals and guitar riffs to the Sonic franchise and various other Sega properties. Better known as Crush 40, Vocalist Johnny Gioeli and video game composer and guitarist Jun Senoue have released a handful of albums over the past 17 years, however many gamers may recognize their work from such titles as Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog; Crush 40 wrote and performed the likes of “Escape From the City”, “Live and Learn” and “I Am All of Me“.
Outside of their contributions to Sega and the Sonic legacy, Crush 40 is currently preparing to release a new album later this year. Among several questions posted on Gioeli’s official Facebook page, a fan asked for an update regarding their new 2016 album. The Crush 40 vocalist responded claiming that the duo are organizing a few appearances this year “to commemorate the anniversary of Sonic“, and that the band “‘might’ participate in writing new songs for the anniversary game”. 2016 marks the 25th Anniversary for the release of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis back in 1991.
The original Facebook post has since been removed, however the quoted response is as follows:
“When will there be news about the Crush 40 album?
-We are planning a few performances for 2016 to commemorate the anniversary of Sonic. We “might” participate in writing new songs for the anniversary game…stay tuned…”
At this time, Sega has not confirmed if a new Sonic game is currently in development, however the official Twitter page for Sega released a commemorative 25th Anniversary image earlier today, as shown above.
