Inti Creates’s Mega Man Zero successor, the Azure Striker Gunvolt sequel comes to Japan this August.
Azure Striker Gunvolt first appeared as a 3DS-exclusive title back in August 2014. Often considered to be a successor to Inti Creates’s Mega Man Zero series, Azure Striker Gunvolt is a side-scrolling action game featuring the lightning-imbued psychic, Gunvolt. The player is tasked with rescuing the psychic Adept Joule and her muse Lumen from the corrupt Sumeragi Group. Rather than continue the run-and-gun style of its biggest influence- Mega Man– Gunvolt’s main ability is his “Flashfield”; players can mark enemies and other targets with Gunvolt’s handgun, then strike them with lightning once they enter the aura of the Flashfield.
Azure Striker Gunvolt fans got their first taste of the sequel earlier this year with an extensive new trailer. Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 will not just feature the titular Gunvolt, but players will now have the option to play as Copen; the rival character from the first game, Copen is an Adept Hunter with the ability to assimilate the abilities of fallen Adepts. In stark contrast with Gunvolt, Copen’s mechanics place him in the air with the ability to chain-dash between enemies.
Inti Creates recently announced that Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 will release in Japan this August. The title will release digitally on the 3DS eShop, and have two special edition physical double packs:
The standard Japanese retail version will include both Azure Striker Gunvolt and Azure Striker Gunvolt 2; a limited edition “Striker Pack” will also be available for purchase featuring a drama CD and information/art book. Depending on the Japanese retailer, fans can receive one of eight physical pre-order bonuses including tapestries, wall scrolls and a stand. Other online retailers including Amazon Japan will have exclusive pre-order DLC content. The participating retailers are as follows:
- Animate: B2 Tapestry
- AmiAmi: Acrylic Multi-Stand
- Imagine: A1 Cloth Poster
- Trader: B2 Tapestry
- NeoWing: 4.4cm/1.7in Tin Badge
- Gamerz: Undecided

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 will release for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on 8/29. A North American physical release has not been confirmed, nor has the game been dated for the region; Gunvolt 2 still has a tentative window of Summer 2016 for NA. As a friendly reminder, a Japanese 3DS is required for anyone who plans on purchasing the Japanese version due to the handheld’s region-lock.
