A new Castlevania title isn’t coming any time soon, but fans can get their first glimpse of the promising animated series in a new trailer from Netflix.
The beloved Castlevania franchise has fallen on hard times as of late; though MercurySteam’s Lords of Shadow prequel trilogy sold relatively well, longtime fans weren’t necessarily pleased with the pacing and gameplay behind the tale of Gabriel Belmont. The final nails in the coffin were set following Konami’s shift towards the gambling and casino industry, with the announcement of a new Castlevania-themed Pachislot pachinko/slot hybrid cabinet.
Fortunately, Castlevania is getting a breath of new life thanks to producer Adi Shankar, Frederator Studios and Netflix. The long-running Gothic horror franchise will receive an animated series of the same name scheduled to debut on Netflix this Summer. According to Shankar, “Castlevania” is based on the NES classic Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, and will follow the last of the Belmont clan on his quest to kill Vlad Dracula Tepe.
Castlevania will be produced under Adi Shankar (Lone Survivor, Dredd, Machine Gun Preacher) and Frederator Studios (“Adventure Time”, “Fairly OddParents”). The mini-series begins streaming exclusively through Netflix on 7/7.
