‘Kingdom Hearts III’ Could Potentially Feature Marvel And Star Wars Characters

Now that Disney possesses both the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, Co-Director Tai Yasue believes that characters from both properties could possibly show up in the upcoming Kingdom Hearts III.

In an interview between Kotaku UK and Kingdom Hearts III game designer and Co-Director Tai Yasue, it was revealed that developer Square Enix was considering the inclusion of Marvel and Star Wars characters in Kingdom Hearts III. Since the release of Kingdom Hearts II 9 years ago, Disney has since acquired the properties to both the Marvel and Star Wars universes, as seen with the re-imagining of Big Hero 6, and the addition of Marvel characters within Disney Infinity.

During the interview, Yasue was asked about the possibility of characters from both universes appearing in the already established Disney/Square Enix (primarily Final Fantasy) cross-over world. While Yasue did not give an official statement regarding a Marvel or Star Wars presence, he stated that Square is “considering  all of the worlds”. Whether or not any comic superheroes will grace the world of Kingdom Hearts depends on the plot, and the “meaning” of the world surrounding each character:

“Yeah, I can’t go into specifics, but there’s a LOT of new Disney stuff and we have our plates full…There’s a lot to consider – we’re looking at all of Disney, the new ones as well, they have a lot of pull and draw….We want variety in our new Kingdom Hearts, so we don’t want too many of one sort of world, that would look the same. For each world there has to be some meaning for it, in the plot; in Birth By Sleep, for instance, in the Cinderella scene, the characters learn something specific by relating to Cinderella….Nothing’s off-limits, we’re considering all of the worlds. There are so many wonderful concepts. We’re happy about that, but at the same time it’s really tough to choose.”

While Kingdom Hearts III has no official release date, it was revealed in October that game development had been shifted to use Unreal Engine 4. The upcoming remastered collection Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMIX is set to release for PS3 on 12/2.
