‘Serious Sam VR’ Revealed, ‘Serious Sam 4’ Still In Development

Croteam and Devolver Digital pulled the lid off the first of two new Serious Sam titles- Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope.

There’s “first-person-shooters”, and then there’s the Serious Sam franchise. From Devolver Digital and Croteam, the Serious Sam titles are notorious for showing no mercy towards the player, thrusting him or her into levels with seemingly overwhelming amounts of enemies that charge forward without remorse. What began as a PC-exclusive FPS saga, Serious Sam has since found itself on multiple consoles, and has since experimented with other genres with the Indie RPG spin-off Serious Sam: The Random Encounter and the side-scrolling action game Serious Sam: Double D [XXL] from Mommy’s Best Games. The latest chapter of the core series, Serious Sam 3: BFE (“Before First Encounter”) is a franchise prequel, placing Sam Stone in Egypt at the start of Mental’s invasion of Earth.

Earlier this month, Serious Sam publisher and developer Devolver Digital and Croteam teased “something serious” for E3 2016 through Twitter. During today’s E3 PC Gaming Show presentation, a new Serious Sam game was announced for VR headsets. Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope has players once again assuming the role of “Serious” Sam Stone, battling the relentless forces of Mental across several planets. Due to the limited movement options of current VR, players will shoot enemies all around them from a fixed location akin to an arcade shooting gallery. Between each mission, players can switch and upgrade weapons and abilities, such as dual-wielding and shields.

According to Croteam’s Twitter account, Serious Sam VR and Serious Sam 4 are two separate titles, as the next chapter of the core series is still in development. Though Serious Sam 3: BFE and The Last Hope use Serious Engine 3.5, the future Serious Sam 4 will feature a completely new, advanced graphics engine.

Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope will release for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive through Steam Early Access sometime this Summer.
