Puzzle Fighter is coming to mobile devices, complete with new characters, mechanics and 3D visuals.
After numerous re-releases across multiple console generations, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is finally getting a proper successor, but probably not where Capcom fans would expect. Announced and playable at PAX West this weekend, Capcom unveiled Puzzle Fighter, currently in development for iOS and Android platforms. The pseudo-sequel still retains its classic match-based puzzle gameplay, however players now have the option of selecting two “Assist” characters to grant special abilities that alter the flow of the game. The original 2D aesthetic has been dropped in favor of 3D character models and environments; according to Capcom’s recent press release, this allows for cinematic special attack cutscenes and detailed stages inspired by other Capcom franchises. Puzzle Fighter will extend beyond Street Fighter and Darkstalkers territory by adding new characters and stages from the likes of Mega Man, Devil May Cry and more; characters confirmed thus far include Chun-Li, Ryu, Ken, E. Honda, Morrigan, X, Mike Haggar, Frank West, Chuck Greene, Dante and Jill Valentine.
Puzzle Fighter will have a soft-release across numerous territories, followed by an unspecified global release “soon” on compatible iOS and Android devices.
