WayForward surprised Shantae fans with a new pajama-themed gameplay mode and cross-over transformation dance in today’s Shantae: Half-Genie Hero update.
The Kickstarter campaign for Shantae: Half-Genie Hero came to a close several years ago, but developer WayForward continues to support the half-genie’s first crowdfunded adventure with new DLC packs featuring multiple costumes, new story modes, and antagonist Risky Boots as a playable character. Following the recent release of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero – Ultimate Edition on consoles and PC, WayForward surprised fans this afternoon with the reveal of a new gameplay mode and genie transformation.
Dubbed the “Shantae Summer Surprise”, today’s update adds “Jammies Mode” to all versions of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. As the name suggests, Jammies Mode features a slumber-party-ready Shantae in not her traditional genie garb, but the pajamas shown at the beginning of Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse. The nightwear comes equipped with alternate sleep-inspired techniques, including a pillow for melee attacks, projectile sheep, and a cloud used to levitate across gaps. Today’s update also features a callback to Blaster Master Zero courtesy of Inti Creates and Sunsoft; as the titular half-genie appeared as a cross-over character in Blaster Master Zero, the side-scrolling adventure’s Sophia III is now available as a genie-transformation. The “Sophia III Dance” transformation can be obtained by trading the “Super Revive Dance” back to any Snake Lady salesman in the game.
Jammies Mode and the Blaster Master Zero Sophia III Dance are available for all players regardless of their status as a Kickstarter supporter, “Slacker-Backer”, or owner of the final retail version. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and the DLC-bundled Ultimate Edition are available for Wii U, PS Vita, Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch.
