With the release of Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- on the horizon, Arc System Works recently explained how numerous online features will work within the highly anticipated Fighter.
After what felt like an eternity, a brand new Guilty Gear title will release next month for both the PS3 and PS4. While it emulates the traditional hand-drawn approach of the previous games, Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- will be the first title in the main series to feature 3D character models and environments. Due to the chronology of the series- Xrd is set after the events of Guilty Gear 2: Overture– a handful of fan-favorites are not present within the arcade version; Arc System Works has previously stated that the console versions will feature exclusive characters, along with three confirmed DLC characters- Sin Kiske, Elphelt and Leo Whitefang.
A recent Famitsu article details more features regarding Guilty Gear Xrd‘s online modes, including the previously mentioned lobby system. Both versions of the game will support 64-player lobbies, where players can chat, directly challenge other players, and organize individual rooms complete with their own match settings. Players also have the option of spectating in other matches currently going on within the lobby. All players in the lobby- whether they are in matches or just spectating- can type chat messages at any time; preset “voiced” character messages can be played during individual private lobbies. Not only will players be able to save match replays to their consoles, but Guilty Gear Xrd will also allow fans to upload their matches onto YouTube. Each replay can also be watched frame-by-frame; the player can add up to 4 gameplay notes into each replay, which can then be seen by others online. Training Mode has always been present in the series, however Xrd will include a 2-player online option.
Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- will have some kind of in-game currency system (not microtransaction-based) which will allow for players to purchase music from the previous Guilty Gear titles, to be used during matches.
The PS4 version has an optional smartphone companion app that will allow users to organize and track tournaments, and receive notifications on current tournament standings. The app will be compatible with the iPhone 4 or higher, and Android 4.0 or higher.
Along with the three DLC characters, 17 character system voice packs will be available to purchase as early as Dec. 9; it has not been specified if these will be available in North America on the same date. Outside of the online capabilities and DLC announcement, Arc System Works released a short clip of the opening scene for Xrd‘s Story Mode, containing all three DLC characters:
Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- will release for both the PS3 and PS4 on 12/4 in Japan, and 12/16 for NA.
