‘Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-‘ Video Highlights “Raven” Gameplay

The immortal warrior with a penchant for masochism, Raven’s mechanics are on display in the latest Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- video.

Following 2014’s return of the Guilty Gear saga, Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- is a direct sequel to Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, featuring new mechanics, a brand new Story Mode, an enhanced online experience, and a plethora of reworked and additional modes to ease newcomers into the bombastic action of the franchise. Though one of the main complaints of -SIGN- was the comparatively small roster, the next chapter of the Guilty Gear franchise will add six additional characters to the console versions, three of which are new to the core games of the series; Johnny, Jam and the eventual Dizzy will be joined by newcomers Jack-O, Kum Haehyun and Raven.

Though he appears in previous titles through story cutscenes, and as a boss and DLC character in Guilty Gear 2: Overture, GGXrd -REVELATOR- marks the first time Raven will be a playable character in the core Fighter saga. An immortal warrior grown apathetic towards life, Raven serves as one of That Man’s servants, only finding pleasure through inflicting and receiving pain; this is best noted by the giant spike driven through his head, and the golden coin embedded in one of his eyes. A new gameplay vignette from Arc System Works highlights some of Raven’s mechanics against a training dummy. As previously stated shortly after his initial reveal, Raven possesses the ability to trade damage for offensive power using his “I Want It Here” technique:

When “I Want It Here” is active, Raven will pose with his arms spread, ready to take any form of attack. Inflicted damage is indicated by an icon above his Tension gauge, and through red “potential damage” in his Health bar. The more damage Raven receives, the stronger his normal attacks and Overdrive specials will become; if the player does not attack while there’s still red potential damage within his Health bar, Raven’s normal health will regenerate. Though the icon above the Tension gauge will remain unaffected, if Raven is attacked after leaving his “I Want It Here” state, he will lose whatever amount of red potential damage is left within his Health bar, akin to Killer Instinct‘s own “white potential damage” mechanic.

An official window has not been revealed, however Raven will be available as a DLC character after the console releases of Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-. Johnny, Jam and Jack-O are included within the base game, with Kum Haehyun being a timed free DLC character; like the Elphelt promotion of Xrd -SIGN-, players wait to download Kum Haehyun will have to purchase him once the launch window is over.

Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- will release for PS3 and PS4 in Japan on 5/26, with North American and European versions arriving on 6/7 and 6/10 respectively.
