An immortal warrior with a penchant for masochism, Raven is now the sixth new character featured in Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-.
A tradition among Japanese franchises, the console versions of fighting games usually see a handful of exclusive characters not found in their original arcade versions. Though many recent characters are relegated to paid-DLC, the console versions usually include fan-favorite characters, cross-over fighters, or brand new entries to the franchise; such examples include Soul Calibur II‘s platform-exclusive fighters (Link on GameCube, Heihachi for PS2, Spawn on Xbox), Billy Kane in KOF XIII, and Guilty Gear Xrd‘s Elphelt and Sin, though both of which were added into the arcade version post-release.
Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- will now feature six additional characters when it finally reaches Sony consoles this Summer. Johnny, Jam Kuradoberi and newcomer Jack-O are present within the current arcade build, however the console versions will feature new character Kum Haehyun, and the fan-voted Dizzy; the winner of a Japan-exclusive poll, Dizzy is currently the only announced character lacking a public reveal. The latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu reveals pseudo-villain “Raven” to be the sixth new character for the PS3 and PS4 versions of -REVELATOR-.
Making his debut in the manga Guilty Gear X: Lighting the Argent, Raven is an immortal fighter with a lust for pain. Born 1,000 years prior to the events of the Guilty Gear saga, Raven previously existed as a German knight who fell to an enemy ambush. The fallen warrior experienced a vision of several birds, followed by excruciating pain; Raven awoke to find his wounds completely healed. After his first “death”, Raven stopped aging and grew apathetic towards the world and his own life; the massive spike through his head is the result of a failed suicide attempt, as he is capable of regenerating from any injury. Raven appears as a servant and messenger of “That Man” in several story endings within the main series, and as a boss and DLC character within Guilty Gear 2: Overture.
A mid-range combat character, masochism plays into Raven’s core gameplay mechanics for Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-. The console-exclusive fighter possesses the special ability “I Want It Here”; for every attack that Raven takes, his damage output will increase. Players who attempt his risk-reward mechanics will also find that his attack properties change upon taking damage.
Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- will release for the PS3 and PS4 on 6/7, with the European versions arriving on 6/10. Those who wish to get their hands on the game early can import the Japanese version, as it launches on 5/27.
