‘Senran Kagura’ Celebration Reveals Four New Titles For Consoles And Mobile

Remakes, social games, anime, pinball and more are all coming to Kenichiro Takaki’s Senran Kagura universe.

What started as a humble side-scrolling action game for the 3DS, Kenichiro Takaki’s Senran Kagura franchise ballooned into a multimedia sensation, spanning multiple consoles, mobile devices, PC and a brief anime series. Earlier this week, publisher Marvelous Entertainment held a Japanese broadcast celebrating the 5th Anniversary of the Senran Kagura series and the launch of Takaki’s new development company Honey ∞ Parade Games.

Marvelous and Nintendo gave Japanese E3 2017 followers a quick tease at a future Senran Kagura title for the Nintendo Switch, however no gameplay was shown- just the promise of the Joy-Cons’ HD Rumble support. Titled Shinobi Refle: Senran Kagura, viewers got their first look at gameplay for the upcoming Switch title during Marvelous’s broadcast:

Shinobi Refle is yet another departure from the rest of the series, taking the form of a one-on-one dating simulator between the player and Asuka; according to the official announcement from Honey ∞ Parade, Asuka isn’t quite her normal self, and it’s the player’s responsibility to help regain that “lost touch”- quite literally, as the player will be thrust into various situations where he or she must touch Asuka via the Joy-Cons. Actions shown in the gameplay footage included holding hands and massaging her thighs with both a massaging-roller and the player’s hands. As the game progresses, Asuka will take on responsibilities apart from “ninja schoolgirl” including being a school tutor, sister, music idol, or “club senpai”.

Though Shinobi Refle was announced back in June, Marvelous and Honey ∞ Parade revealed a second Senran Kagura game in development for the Nintendo Switch- Peach Ball: Senran Kagura. Yet another gameplay deviation from the series’s lust for high-octane action, Peach Ball is a pseudo-traditional pinball game with the ladies of the Senran Kagura universe integrated into each table; no gameplay was shown during the Honey ∞ Parade and Marvelous broadcast, but Honey ∞ Parade confirmed that Peach Ball: Senran Kagura will utilize the Switch’s HD Rumble to simulate the ball hitting the flippers and other objects, and bouncing against the more…robust parts of characters present in the table.

Two more Senran Kagura games will join Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash on the PS4 sometime next year. Sony gamers who missed out on Senran Kagura’s 3DS debut will have the pleasure of reliving Senran Kagura Burst on a much larger screen with Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal. The PS4-exclusive remake re-imagines the game as a third-person brawler similar to other Sony [and PC] installments Shinovi Versus and Estival Versus. Though development is only 30% complete according to the announcement, a limited edition “Nyuu Nyuu DX Pack” has already been revealed, containing the game soundtrack, “illustration card” with a DLC code, and six character “Lover’s Straps”; character “Yumi” will be available as a limited edition bonus DLC character with her own story mode, and is expected to be made available to the public on a later date. First-print copies of Re:Newal will also contain another illustration card with a DLC code for the “Forbidden Fruit Cutie Peach and Melon” costume set.

It’s unclear as to what the game is exactly, as it was partnered with the announcement of a second season of Senran Kagura’s anime adaptation, but Senran Kagura 7even: Girls’ Happiness is currently in development for the PS4.

Japanese iOS and Android users are in store for another mobile Senran Kagura installment later this year with Shinobi Master Senran Kagura: New Link. Where the previous mobile title- Senran Kagura: New Wave– was a social-based card-battle game, New Link will be an RPG featuring 20 characters at launch, with more to follow over the lifespan of the game; several ninjas from the numerous other games will return sporting new designs, however New Link will feature a brand new trio of “Ultimate Shinobi” villains- Fubuki, Gekko and Senko.

Shinobi Refle: Senran Kagura has no official release date, but is expected to arrive on the Japanese Nintendo Switch eShop before the end of the year. The launch price is confirmed to be 1,000y/$9.00; direct examples were not given, but additional character scenarios are expected to release as future DLC. Shinobi Master Senran Kagura: New Link will join New Wave in the Japanese library of Android and iOS devices later this year, followed by the Japanese release of Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal for the PS4 on 2/22/2018.

Peach Ball: Senran Kagura and Senran Kagura 7seven: Girls’ Happiness are both expected to release in 2018 for the Nintendo Switch and PS4 respectively.
